Irene Clark : New York Artist

Chullpa, or funeral house, is the name of the stony environment that the cloud people chose for their dead who were wrapped and secreted in caves located in the Andean mountaintops of Peru.

Chullpa, executed in 2001, is the most important work in a series of mixed media paintings, prints and collages that depict sacred burials in antiquity. Ancient peoples are being resurrected and desecrated in the name of a new religion, science. In these artworks specific cultural references to textiles, paintings or artifacts are included along with the figures and are intended to express the unique beauty of each of those civilizations.
